Is anyone planning a day or weekend birding trip from Seoul to Choerwon during the crane migration that I could tag along on? James H.

I am planning to travel up this w/end, but am unsure about the timing of the crane migration.
Does anyone have information on timing/location in the Cheorwon area?

Hi James, John,

The Cranes start moving out around mid March and are mostly gone by end of month.
If you have a car (and binoculars), you will have no problem seeing Cranes from the road, feeding in ricefields that surround the town. A good general area to try is near the Old Korean workers party office (burned out shell of a building).
If you are without transport, local taxi drivers are used to taking people to see the birds. it is most important to drive slowly and  not to disturb them of course.

Hangnamori

I appreciate the information - will probably see you on the road one day.
My only regret is that I'll not be able to meet up with Nial and others at Hwangin-po (probably wrong name) on the East coast over the week-end.
As for the cranes - we'll find them.
And, we'll stay off all possibly mined scrubland.

Regards

John and Hangnamori,  Thanks for the posts.  Sorry, I got swamped with work after making the post.  March 22 or 23 I could go.  Might be too late. Good luck.  James

For those needing a taxi to get around birding in Cheorwon I can recommend:-

"Cheaper Taxi'  tel. 017 230 3039
(Choi su Yol)

The driver is very easy-going, and familiar with driving birders around and knows all the areas of habitat to go to. he even features red-crowned cranes on his business card.
